Grassroots Activism exploded during the 2004 Presidential election in Louisiana, which led to the first Louisiana Grassroots Convention in July 2005, Beaucoup Blues. Grassroots Activism has led the recovery of New Orleans since Katrina/Rita 2005. Grassroots Activism led to significant changes in OPDEC, the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee (www.OPDEC.org) in the February 9th 2008 election, where two slates of reform candidates joined together to move neighborhood advocates into the political spectrum. For the 2008-2012 term, a new Chair, James A Gray II, and new 1st Vice Chair, Deborah Langhoff, were unanimously elected to lead the committee. Grassroots Activism led to the first Democratic challenge in 20 years of a 32-year regime in LA-94 that resulted in a spirited run-off election, and other elections around Louisiana prove that much conventional wisdom of who and where to run for office has been turned upside down whenever citizens are personally engaged in politics. Grassroots Activism elected President Barack Obama in 2008 and supports his agenda for health care, education, and economic opportunity. These and other efforts are chronicled on the pages of www.LaRoots.net which began in March 2004 but now, with the help of the LaRoots e-bulletin, turns attention to the future. Who is the Louisiana Democratic Party and where is it going? Qualifying for the Party seats is December 7, 8, and 9th, 2011, elections are in March 2012, and more information can be found on the Louisiana Secretary of State website.
LaRoots.netis a private Louisiana database project to nurture and sustain an independent grassroots network which can spark support for liberal candidates and progressive ideas. This network grows by people inviting their friends to join. Identifying like-minded voters in this "neighbor to neighbor" way energizes many citizens not usually active in political efforts. Contact information is held privately in LaRoots.net and will not be given away or sold. We publish an LaRoots.net email bulletin that serves as a source of information about activities, both local and national. If you have a group or event that you would like promoted in our bulletin, please email LaRoots@cox.net In March 2004, LaRoots.net began as KerryRoots.com, created by Alan and Deborah Langhoff to promote John Kerry's candidacy in Louisiana. KerryRoots collected contact information on Kerry supporters across Louisiana and established the statewide KerryRoots e-mail bulletin to activate volunteers, staff phone banks, and create canvassing teams by ward/precinct where addresses were included. Our database has supported national, statewide and local campaigns.
