IN NOVEMBER 2005, on the night of the DNC's National Organizing Kick-Off, Democrats in Blue Jeans was founded under lights driven by generators at the LaRoots office on Canal Street in post-Katrina New Orleans. The DNC used the grassroots meeting to help spotlight the on-going Katrina Disaster by inviting Deborah Langhoff of LaRoots to introduce Gov Howard Dean to his national conference call audience. Baton Rouge activists Vicki Lancaster and Barbara Nielsen volunteered to take the lead in organizing relief efforts for the surrounding historic, but devastated, Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans.
